You leave because of the wobbles you tried to ignore.
It’s the kickoff where the goal shifts mid-call:
“It’s not that anymore… well, we’re not sure what it is.”
It’s the internal stakeholder who quietly rewrites your work.
It’s the request to “ignore the user feedback” right after they said they wanted evidence.
Individually, these are irritations.

Tell: You present to someone who’s not the decision-maker

Ask four questions.
If you can’t get three yeses within two weeks, it’s time to go.
Owner: Who is the DRI?
One person with authority, budget, and veto power.Definition: What exactly are we building this cycle?
One sentence.Evidence: What tells us we’re right?
Users, metrics, or tests.Rescope: How do we handle new ideas?
Backlog, review cadence, and a change-order policy.
No Owner + no Definition + no Evidence + no Rescope = no runway.
The One-Page Reset (Before the Exit)
Try this once before walking:
The Good: Real progress shipped
The Bad: What’s blocked
The Ugly: The structural issue (goal whiplash, missing DRI, gatekeeping)
The Path Forward: Three steps, owners, dates, and a decision ritual
Frame it as systemic:
“The structure we’ve built isn’t supporting good work right now.”
Make the deadline explicit:
“If we can’t get clarity on all four areas by [DATE], we’ll wrap up smoothly.”
If they engage, continue.
If they stall, exit.

Values/Outcomes Misalignment

If the four questions still can’t be answered by week four, the fit isn’t there.
Make it about bandwidth, not blame:
